The Quicksilver Mercury Tri-Test utilises a patient’s blood, hair and urine specimens to assess the body’s mercury speciation, body burden as well as detoxification/excretion patterns, by looking specifically at methyl-mercury (Me-Hg) and Inorganic (ethyl) mercury (In-Hg).

Blood mercury levels are dependent on each patients’ genetic detoxification predisposition (slow, normal, fast detoxifiers). Blood mercury is predominantly in the Me-Hg form, with minimal In-Hg present. In-Hg is cytotoxic (but is unable to cross the Blood Brain Barrier).
Me-Hg readily crosses into the body tissues, including the Blood Brain Barrier.

Urine mercury levels will show that as blood inorganic mercury levels rise there is a proportional/linear rise in urine inorganic mercury levels. The patient values of these two levels are plotted on the report in graphical representation and one expects to see the value fall on the line or above the diagonal line.

Plotted values that fall below the line into the red region indicate retention toxicity where the kidneys are unable to effectively clear inorganic mercury.

Where liver function (detoxification) is normal one expects that as hair total mercury levels rise there is a proportional/linear rise in blood methyl-mercury levels. The patient values of these two levels are plotted on the report in graphical representation and one expects to see the value fall on the line or above the diagonal line.

Plotted values that fall below the line into the red region indicate the body’s inability to mobilise methyl mercury from the tissues into the bloodstream.

Two key factors influencing the interpretation of patient results are;
1. A fish/seafood diet is the major source of Me-Hg.
2. Dental amalgams/implants is the major source of In-Hg.
