Description
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when excessive bacteria grow in the small intestine, an area usually low in bacterial activity, leading to chronic digestive symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, excessive gas, diarrhoea, or constipation. Left untreated, SIBO can cause nutrient deficiencies, including vitamin B12, as well as weight loss and fatigue. Over time, it may contribute to more severe conditions like leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and systemic inflammation. The glucose breath test is a simple, non-invasive way to diagnose SIBO by measuring hydrogen and methane gases produced when bacteria ferment glucose in the proximal small intestine. During the test, you’ll drink a glucose solution, and your breath will be analysed at intervals to detect bacterial activity. This test is highly specific for identifying bacterial overgrowth in the upper small intestine, enabling early diagnosis and targeted treatment to help manage symptoms and improve overall health.
