Description
The Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) test is a blood test used to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBNA antibodies typically appear after the acute phase of infection, marking a later stage in the immune response. EBNA IgG antibodies generally develop 2 to 4 months following the initial EBV infection, distinguishing them from other antibodies like the Viral Capsid Antigen IgM, which appear earlier. Once formed, these antibodies remain in the bloodstream for life, indicating a past infection and providing evidence of long-term immunity. Unlike antibodies present during the acute phase, EBNA IgG antibodies do not appear during this stage, making the EBNA test particularly useful for distinguishing between a current and past infection. This test provides valuable information on whether a person has had a previous EBV infection and developed immunity, or if a current infection is present.
