Description
Intrinsic Factor antibodies and Gastric Parietal Cell antibodies are autoantibodies linked to autoimmune conditions such as pernicious anaemia and autoimmune gastritis. Intrinsic Factor, produced by the cells in the stomach lining, is crucial for vitamin B12 absorption. When Intrinsic Factor antibodies mistakenly attack this protein, vitamin B12 absorption is impaired, potentially causing pernicious anaemia and neurological issues. Gastric Parietal Cell antibodies target the stomach’s parietal cells, which produce both intrinsic factor and gastric acid. Their presence indicates autoimmune gastritis, often leading to gastric mucosa atrophy and reduced production of intrinsic factor and hydrochloric acid. Both Intrinsic Factor and Gastric Parietal Cell antibodies are associated with vitamin B12 deficiency, making their detection vital for diagnosing and managing autoimmune stomach conditions. Identifying these antibodies can guide treatment strategies and help monitor disease progression, supporting better patient outcomes.
