Description
Protein tumour markers are substances produced by the body in response to cancer, playing a vital role in cancer detection, treatment monitoring, and assessing the risk of recurrence. Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland, with elevated levels commonly linked to prostate cancer. PSA is commonly used for screening, monitoring treatment effectiveness, and detecting cancer recurrence. However, PSA levels can also be elevated in non-cancerous conditions like prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Alongside their role in early detection, protein markers are essential for tracking cancer progression and the effectiveness of treatment. A significant reduction in marker levels often signals a positive treatment response, while rising levels may indicate recurrence or progression. While tumour markers are useful in guiding cancer management, they should be considered alongside other diagnostic tools, such as imaging and biopsies, to ensure accurate interpretation and decision-making.
