Description
The anaemia screen is a useful test for any practitioner who suspects anaemia in their patient. What is included is Iron Studies, Vitamin B12 and Folate, Intrinsic Factor Antibodies and GPC Ab.
Iron Studies are useful in the assessment of the body’s iron status in order to identify iron deficiency anaemia.
Vitamin B12 and Folate may be related to B12 or Folate deficiency anaemia. Vitamin B12 is usually found in animal products so Vegetarians or Vegans may be at a higher risk of a deficiency state. Pernicious anaemia may also be related to a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Intrinsic Factor antibodies are immune system proteins that are produced in response to pernicious anaemia. Intrinsic Factor is required for the body to be able to absorb Vitamin B12. If intrinsic factor antibodies are present, it means the immune system is attacking its own parietal cells or intrinsic factor. The antibodies disable the intrinsic factor from the amount of intrinsic factor antibody is measured in a blood sample.
Gastric Parietal Cell Antibodies (GPC) are antibodies formed against a parietal cell enzyme. It is associated with autoimmune gastritis, which often progresses
