Description

Selenium plays a critical role in antioxidant defence, thyroid hormone metabolism, and fertility and reproduction (1, 2). Adequate selenium levels support an efficient immune system, protect against oxidative stress, and play a role in DNA synthesis and repair (1).

Conversely, selenium deficiency can lead to health problems, including weakened immunity, thyroid dysfunction, and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases like heart disease and certain cancers (1, 2). Monitoring selenium levels ensures that individuals maintain an optimal balance of this micronutrient, promoting overall health and reducing the risk of associated disorders.
