Description
Zinc is an essential mineral vital for cognitive function, immunity, DNA synthesis, fertility, and maintenance of hair, skin, and nails (1, 2). Monitoring zinc levels is especially important for individuals with dietary restrictions, such as vegetarians and vegans, who may be at risk of deficiency. Identifying Zinc deficiencies can guide appropriate dietary adjustments and supplementation, ensuring optimal health and preventing related disorders.
Zinc plasma levels are used for short-term assessment and can detect recent changes in zinc intake or supplementation. Zinc red cell levels provide a more stable, long-term picture of zinc status and are suitable for assessing chronic or ongoing deficiency. The choice between the two depends on the clinical context and the specific information needed for diagnosis or monitoring.
